Great film, so fast-paced it makes every other film out there look slow and old-fashioned. Wonderful to see George Miller back on the Australian road, where he belongs. Charlize Theron is great, Tom Hardy is not bad, but the stunts are really where the film shines. It's hard to think of a better action road movie. It has all the intensity and perversity of the MAD MAX and THE ROAD WARRIOR, but amped up to new heights of craziness. Miller is the real star of the film -- in some ways technology seems to have finally caught up with his early hyperactive camera style, and he takes full advantage of the ability to move wherever he wants, however he wants.

serena 2014

Description

A new movie starring Jennifer Lawrence and her American Hustle co-star Bradley Cooper? Featuring tension, violence, sweeping mountain locations, and jazz-age costumes that are duly removed for sizzling scenes of a sexual nature? Shouldn’t this new J-Law and B-Coop event be the biggest thing around as we enter awards season?
Well … not exactly. This interesting, flawed film was completed more than two years ago, then shelved while its distributors wondered what to do with it. Despite offering what is arguably Jennifer Lawrence’s most ambitious and grownup performance so far, Serena has been left to sidle into UK cinemas right after a notably un-hoopla’d premiere at the London film festival. The American release is still a while off.
Its director is Susanne Bier, the Danish film-maker responsible for the challenging drama In a Better World, and who also gained a commercial track record with English-language movies such as Love is All You Need and Things We Lost in the Fire. Bier is an interesting person to take charge of this big emotional spectacle, set in depression-era America in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina. It is clotted with its own atmosphere of tragic gloom and erotic doom.

  1. In Depression-era North Carolina, the barren wife (Jennifer Lawrence) of an ambitious timber baron (Bradley Cooper) sets out to murder the woman who bore her husband an illegitimate son.
  2. Initial release: October 24, 2014 (United Kingdom)
  3. Director: Susanne Bier
  4. Running time: 1h 49m
  5. Screenplay: Christopher Kyle
  6. Genre: Drama film

Broad Green Pictures Takes The Infiltrator, Starring Bryan Cranston

Takes The Infiltrator, Starring Bryan Cranston

Broad Green Pictures announced today the U.S. acquisition of Brad Furman’s The Infiltrator. Adapted by Ellen Brown Furman from the autobiography by Robert Mazur, The Infiltrator stars Emmy and Golden Globe winner Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad,” Argo) alongside Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), Golden Globe nominee John Leguizamo (Chef), Benjamin Bratt (Traffic), Yul Vazquez (Captain Phillips), and Academy Award nominee Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone).
Based on the true story of a fearless operative, the film relates the account of one of history’s largest and most elaborate stings. Set amidst the lavish excess of the 1980’s, The Infiltrator tells the story of undercover US Customs agent Robert Mazur (Cranston) AKA Robert Musella, who became a pivotal player for drug lords cleaning their dirty cash. He traded on mob connections to become the confidant to scores of the international underworld, and the bankers who enabled them. Laying his life on the line, he infiltrated the globe’s largest cartels and discovered just how deep into society their influence extended. The operation reeled in key players in a chain stretching all the way to Escobar. Their arrests would lead to the collapse of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, and shake the underground economy to its core.
“I’m thrilled to be partnering with Broad Green Pictures,” says Furman. :This project was truly a labor of love for all involved, and I can’t wait for Broad Green, whose passion for film is unparalleled, to bring ‘The Infiltrator’ to a wide audience.”
“Brad Furman is a major talent who has brought an exciting and intense piece of U.S history to screen,” says said CEO Gabriel Hammond and Daniel Hammond, Broad Green’s Chief Creative Officer. “We are eager to work with the filmmakers and cast to make sure their vision is realized for the release of this film.”
“We are so proud of this movie,” adds Good Films Founder Miriam Segal, “and could not be happier to be partnering with the brilliant team at Broad Green Pictures, whose passion and commitment to excellence will ensure this extraordinary real-life thriller reaches and excites the broadest of U.S. audiences.”
The deal was brokered on behalf of the filmmakers by WME, while Dylan Wiley, President of Specialty Releasing and Chris Tricarico, EVP Business Affairs handled for Broad Green. The Infiltrator is produced by Good Films’ Miriam Segal, with Bank Leumi, Good Films and LipSync co-financing.

Dallas Buyers Club Scribe to Draft Zombies vs. Robots Adaptation

Sony Pictures’ upcoming adaptation of the IDW comic book series “Zombies vs. Robots” has today scored an Academy Award nominated screenwriter. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Craig Borten, who wrote Dallas Buyers Club alongside Melisa Wallack, has signed on to draft the film, which is going by the title Inherit the Earth. As reported earlier this year, Andrew Adamson (ShrekThe Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe) is attached to direct.
Launched in 2005, “Zombies vs. Robots” is officially described on IDW’s site as follows:
It’s tech prowess meets undead mayhem! Eisner Award-nominated team of artist Ashley Wood (“Popbot”) and writer Chris Ryall (“The Great and Secret Show”), a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies has only one chance at recovery – a team of robots that must protect and clone a lone surviving human baby. They just need to do this amidst the endless hordes of zombies who have been driven rabid by their frustration at inedible bots and their lust to eat the one living brain left on the planet.
Set to be produced by Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, Andrew Form, Dave Alpert and Rick Jacobs, Inherit the Earth is a co-production of Platinum Dunes, Circle of Confusion and IDW Publishing with Sony Pictures set to distribute. Previously, Oren Uziel (the upcoming Kitchen Sink) was attached to script.

Today, Paramount Pictures has revealed that World War Z 2 will be waged on June 9, 2017. That’s the same day that 20th Century Fox has earmarked for its planned Fantastic Four 2. That’s the same day as Warner Bros.’ comic book showdown Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Locke writer and director Steven Knight will be providing the screenplay for World War Z 2 with Pitt again serving as producer.

Written by Academy Award nominee Nia Vardalos, who stars alongside the entire returning cast of favorites, the film reveals a Portokalos family secret that will bring the beloved characters back together for an even bigger and Greeker wedding.

Why the Lobo Movie Hasn’t Happened Yet

Lobo Movie

It was just a few years back that director Brad Peyton, fresh off the box office success of his second feature film, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, signed on to develop a feature film based on DC Comics’ intergalactic antihero, Lobo. Word even followed that the film, to be produced by Joel Silver, looked like it was going to star Journey‘s Dwayne Johnson as the Main Man. Although Johnson and Peyton did reteam, their second project together became this month’s disaster actioner San Andreas instead. Meanwhile, the big screen DC Universe was officially revealed last October without a Czarnian in sight.
“I think what’s happening with DC is that they have prioritized what they need to make first in order to kind of lay the foundations for the DC Universe,” Peyton told ComingSoon.net this weekend at the San Andreas junket. “This is what I believe is happening just from what they’ve been taking about. They’re talking about ‘Justice League,’ ‘Batman v Superman,’ and going into ‘Flash,’ ‘Wonder Woman,’ and ‘Aquaman.’ Those are kind of the pillars of that universe.”
Unfortunately for the project, it sounds like Lobo was put on the back burner at the studio, despite having a completed screenplay.
“It’s one of those things where, creatively, you and I get it, but there’s a lot of people that don’t quite get that,” Peyton said when asked if the success of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxyhelped bolster the chances of a film based on a similarly comedically irreverent space-traveling comic book character. “It’s a real uphill battle to talk people into spending a lot of money to do things correctly… I was really happy with the script, [though]. I talked with Dwayne about it. Joel Silver and I had a really amazing meeting about it. I did a rewrite of the script and was really, really excited for it. In their estimation, though, he wasn’t one of those main guys… That’s fair enough. I think that, to do any kind of comic book universe correctly, you do need to establish, ‘Here’s the tone. Here’s the main people.’ Then we can grow offshoots from there. With Marvel, they’re now doing smaller characters like ‘Ant-Man’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ They obviously had to start, though, with their big guns and set up ‘The Avengers.’ I kind of feel like that’s where DC is now. They’re setting that team up.”
Does that mean that Lobo could return somewhere down the line? Peyton seems optimistic at the prospect.
“I think there’s going to be a really amazing time for ‘Lobo’ and I think people are going to realize, certainly once they revisit it, what they’re sitting on,” he says. “But you never know. I’m really happy with the project and where we got it and fingers crossed it comes to fruition at some point.”
Of course, Johnson has since committed to playing Black Adam in Shazam. Would you be happy with Johnson playing two roles in the big screen DC Universe or do you think a new Lobo would need to be found?
We’ll have lots more from Peyton and the cast of San Andreas soon, so check back and catch the film in 2D and 3D theaters on May 29.

Review:

After two years without a movie, Pixar Animation Studios is back trying to reestablish themselves as the masters of animated storytelling with the simple premise of going inside the mind of an 11-year-old girl named Riley, who is forced to move from her Midwestern home to San Francisco, a situation she has trouble dealing with. The idea is that we’re all controlled by a series of five emotions: Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Fear and Anger, all of them driven by their own personalities. In the case of Riley, they’re portrayed by Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Mindy Kaling, Bill Hader and Lewis Black, which makes it evident this concept will be used for optimal humor, although Inside Out is much more than a stream of jokes.
The story begins with Riley’s birth, which is also the awakening of Joy, who over the next few years is joined in “Headquarters” by others, including Sadness, Disgust, Fear and Anger, who each have their roles in creating Riley’s mood and personality. As one might expect, Joy is exactly as she’s named, an energetic ball of enthusiasm who tries to motivate the others to be just as happy as she is. As Riley gets older, others become more dominant, particularly the sad sack that is Sadness, who always finds a way of bringing things down. Relocating to San Francisco with her parents sends Riley on an emotional roller coaster that keeps them quite busy. Another major part of their job is to create and store Riley’s most important, core memories, kept in a special location where they branch out to create islands that make up Riley’s personality: family, friendship and hockey are three of the things that drive the girl.
This essential premise gives director Pete Docter (UpMonster’s, Inc.) the opportunity to create an incredibly complex and layered film that has lots of funny moments and puns like showing how the residents of Headquarters are affected by “brain freeze” and how everything they do affects Riley’s behavior, which her parents start to notice as well.
The characters are fun once they start growing on you, although it takes some time before you can adjust to having such differing personalities. Sadness, Fear and Disgust are basically one joke and it’s not a particularly funny one, and Anger isn’t much of a stretch for Lewis Black, who offers some of the movie’s funniest moments. One of the best scenes is when we’re at the dinner table and we realize that Riley’s parents have their own Headquarters, something that could have been re-explored to get even bigger laughs.
The drama comes in the form of Joy trying to keep Sadness’ constant interference from affecting Riley to the point where the two of them end up stranded outside Headquarters leaving the other three in control. This is where Inside Out turns into an epic adventure as Joy and Sadness visit different areas of the brain, places like Imagination Land and Riley’s subconscious and they meet characters like the Richard Kind-voiced Bing Bong, Riley’s childhood imaginary friend who she has forgotten.
That’s really where Inside Out excels since it uses this story to show how we grow up and how our innocence gets lost as we start to be affected by the world around us. For parents of young kids, this is a fairly jarring wake-up-call to be reminded that their children won’t be children forever, something that becomes heartbreakingly evident as Joy and Sadness’ absence starts affecting Riley’s memories and personality. (Although if someone’s emotions suddenly started going haywire, wouldn’t they just turn a sociopath or a vegetable? I guess that’s a very different movie.)
Inside Out does have the benefit of being able to jump from the “mind world” to the real world, where we see how the emotions’ actions are affecting Riley’s behavior, although the real world stuff is fairly mundane in comparison, even if the photorealism contrasts well with the fantastical world inside Riley’s mind. This may be partially why Inside Out, like Up, feels a bit uneven at times, since it’s trying so hard to be funny one moment and then things take a dark turn, making it hard to figure out how to feel about things. Even so, it all leads to an incredibly emotional last act as tear-inducing as the famous five-minute silent montage from Up.
It’s hard to consider Inside Out a kid’s movie, since there’s so much kids probably won’t understand or appreciate. Even so, it’s another feather in the cap for Docter, who will probably continue Pixar’s run at dominating the Oscars by once again breaking away from what can/can’t-should/shouldn’t been done with animation.

The Bottom Line:

As we’ve come to expect from Pixar, Inside Out is another gorgeous, colorful film that often makes you forget you’re watching animation. Inside Out is a bittersweet look at childhood’s end that might be Pixar’s most layered and complex film since Ratatouille.
